Conferentie Navigating the Northern Seas

De Association for the History of the Northern Seas, het Zeeuws Archief en het Zeeuws Maritiem Muzeeum organiseren van 18 tot en met 20 augustus 2005 een conferentie over cartografie en navigatie. De voertaal van de conferentie is Engels.

De weg vinden op zee is een van de belangrijkste uitdagingen voor de varende mens. De kust of stromingen volgen vormden een eerste oplossing. Vervolgens kwamen getekende en gedrukte beschrijvingen van de kusten in woord en beeld. Zeekaarten en navigatie-instrumenten maakten het mogelijk een koers uit te zetten op volle zee. Het onderzoek naar de geschiedenis van de navigatie was sterk gericht op de navigatietheorie, maar recenter is de aandacht ook uitgegaan naar navigatieonderwijs en logboeken. Daardoor weten we nu ook meer over de praktijk van de navigatie.

De conferentie kent op donderdag 18 augustus 2005 een Zeeuwse dag, waarop recent onderzoek gepresenteerd wordt naar de Zeeuwse scheepvaart in de periode van de Republiek. Aan de orde komen onder meer de scheepvaart van de Middelburgse Commercie Compagnie, koopvaardij en scheepsbeweging in de achttiende eeuw, equipagemeesters en kaapvaart. Het programma voor de Zeeuwse dag vindt u hierna (in het Engels).

De Zeeuwse dag vindt plaats in het Zeeuws Archief (Middelburg). De dag begint om 10.00 uur met inschrijving en een kopje koffie. Het programma start om 11.00 uur. De dag omvat een lunch en een borrel.

Deelname aan de Zeeuwse dag kost € 25, aan de conferentie als geheel € 100. Lunches, koffie, thee en borrel zijn bij de prijs inbegrepen. Inschrijving geschiedt door overmaking van het verschuldigde bedrag op giro 4370746 t.n.v. Association for the History of the Northern Seas te Diemen. Vermeld u a.u.b. uw naam en adres op de overschrijving.
